Test Description
This 4th generation HIV test provides early and accurate detection of HIV by identifying both the HIV p24 antigen and antibodies to HIV-1 and HIV-2. The p24 antigen can be detected as early as 2–3 weeks after exposure, while antibodies typically appear 23–90 days later. By detecting both, this test reduces the “window period” to 18–45 days post-exposure, offering faster and more reliable results. Early diagnosis enables timely intervention, treatment, and prevention strategies.
What’s included in this test?
HIV p24 Antigen
The HIV p24 antigen is a core protein of the HIV virus that appears in the blood 2–3 weeks after exposure, making it helpful for early HIV detection. However, it becomes undetectable after 40–45 days as the body produces antibodies against it. This 4th generation HIV test identifies both the p24 antigen and antibodies to HIV-1 and HIV-2, shortening the “window period” to 18–45 days after exposure.
HIV-1 and HIV-2 Antibodies
HIV-1 and HIV-2 antibodies are created by the immune system in response to HIV infection. They usually appear in the blood 23–90 days after exposure and remain detectable for life. Tests that only detect antibodies have a longer “window period,” during which an infected person can transmit HIV but still test negative. The 4th generation test combines the detection of antibodies and the earlier-appearing p24 antigen, reducing the “window period” to 18–45 days after exposure.
